l'oggetto

for orchestra
composed by Ulrich Schultheiss

"The Thing - or How to destroy an ideal world"

“The accidental discovery of an indefinable object upsets a peaceful world. Forgotten feelings of envy, jealousy, violence and hatred resurface. Possession of the "object" tempts one to strive for superiority and power. Worthlessness is only recognised when violence escalates in human distress.”

"Ballet Suite L'Oggetto (1985) ... points to philosophical-critical motivations. In the spirit of a new expressionist immediacy of gesture, Schultheiss creates sonic images of a peaceful world drifting into chaos, torn apart by aggression and tension. Out of hardened rhythms, rudimentarily descriptive gestures and largely unused timbres, he weaves a modern dance of death, in whose compulsive sequences there are only apparent, deceptive reassurances and satisfactions. The premiere had a high degree of intensity, impact and profile."
